Snow Trails 50th Celebration

January 22, 2011

NEWS FROM SNOW TRAILS

For Immediate Release January 22, 2011

Celebrating 50 years of winter fun and rich history at Snow Trails

Mansfield, OH, January 22, 2011: Snow Trails Winter Resort is celebrating 50 years this winter season. The resort was the first commercial ski resort in Ohio, back in the winter of 1961- 1962. "Snow Trails 50th Celebration" will express the rich history of alpine skiing in Ohio, with on-snow games, races, and entertainment from morning to night.

The slopes and tubing park will open at 9:00AM Saturday, January 29, 2011. Daytime activities will include prize contests for best retro or throwback outfits and gear, to include skis, jackets, ski poles, snowboards, and other nostalgic items. A 50th Celebration Giant Slalom Cup Challenge Race will take place on the Competition Slope at 1:00PM, with modern equipment and a special division for vintage straight skis, with a minimum length of 200cm.

An informal ceremony to recognize 50th years at Snow Trails, and more importantly to honor David L. Carto for his dedication to the ski industry, will take place at 6:00PM. Michael Berry, President of the NSAA (National Ski Areas Association), will be in attendance to present Mr. Carto with a plaque to commemorate the accomplishments and contributions to the ski industry.

The Celebration will be complete with Terrain Park features constructed on the Mt. Mansfield Slope, created from snow, metal rails, and various other items. The highlighted feature will be a Hummer H1 SUV supporting a 16' long metal rail spanning over the top of the vehicle. Participants will session these features by skiing or snowboarding up and off snow ramps, sliding across the features. Other snow and ice sculptures are planned to be created.

During the event, an outdoor DJ set-up, spinning favorite party tunes, will entertain guests during the evening hours, at the base of the Mt. Mansfield Slope.

"The Going" from Columbus will entertain guests beginning at 9:00PM in The Snowflake Loft. The slopes will close at 9:30PM. Shortly thereafter a fireworks show will light-up the night sky, reflecting brilliant colors across the white snow. The Vertical Descent Tubing Park will close at Midnight.

Snow Trails, which was the first commercial ski area in Ohio, is "Celebrating 50 years" this season. The privately owned resort has been under the same management since its inception. The resort features six chairlifts, two conveyor carpet lifts (one is utilized for the Tubing Park) and 15 trails plus three terrain parks and glade areas. The resort usually opens in early December and the season lasts into March. The resort is located off Interstate 71 south of Mansfield on Possum Run Road.
