2007: Burning Ceremony Opposed Print E-mail

For Immediate Release

Burning Ceremony Opposed by Anti-Winter Cabal

Against opposition, Snow Trail Ski Resort will revive the "Burning of ZOZOBRA" ancient snow ritual to appease the gods and usher in a snowy winter.

Mansfield, OH, October 12, 2007--- Reports from the Possum Run Valley are that plans to burn ZOZOBRA on October 21st could be banned by local authorities after receiving threatening calls from area residents who hate snow.

Ernest Wilbauger, Washington Township's marshal, went on record saying he might not like snow either, but he can't do anything to stop those who gather at Snow Trails on October 21st to join in the burning of ZOZOBRA. "We just don't want any more snow in the Valley," he said.

The "Burning of ZOZOBRA" is an ancient Maipoe ritual of the Argentine that is celebrated when the days grow shorter and the weather cools.  According to Mark Rauschenberger, a local expert, the change in the climate causes the snow god Ullr to awaken from his summer slumber. In order to appease Ullr and ensure bountiful snow, cold weather and sunny skies, it is traditional to burn an effigy of ZOZOBRA.  "It is the only way to appease this ancient shepherd of snow" according to Rauschenberger.

ZOZOBRA symbolizes all the hard work of the long summer and the ritual burning releases the snow god to bring on the winter season in all its splendor. Skiers and snowboarders as well as all winter sports enthusiasts are anxious to perform the ceremony in spite of the threatened ban against it, according to Nate Wolleson, Marketing Manager of Snow Trails.

The Ski Shop at Snow Trails, will be sponsoring the Burning of the ZOZOBRA and hopes to appease the gods by offering special discounts on apparel, skis, snowboards, bindings and more.  To nurture the celebrants who are planning to defy the anti-winter zealots, beer and brats will be available alongside the bonfire to enliven their spirits.

Although certain ancient chants will be made to Ullr, no one can predict a successful outcome of the event unless the ritual is carried out to Ullr's satisfaction.  For those who are confident that Ullr will bring forth the winter of '07-'08, Snow Trails season passes will be available.

Here is a schedule for the October 21st happenings:

Ski Shop Sale 11am - 6pm

Beer and Brats 4pm - 8pm

Burning ZOZOBRA Bonfire 7pm
